Right - A photo of one of my old postcards from my collection.  Old postcards are an invaluable source which allow you to see how these monuments originally appeared, often standing in splendid isolation creating a powerful focus of remembrance.  Today they are usually surrounded by the clutter of street architecture, street signs and advertising hoardings (not to mention cars) which all compete with the memorial for attention.

Above - The finished work, the Auchtermuchty soldier carved in Carrick's Edinburgh yard.

Some years ago the Fife town was the setting for a new series of the television programme 'Doctor Findlay's Casebook' and the memorial featured in several scenes
