The Fraserburgh war memorial today with the green patina shown to good effect.

There was a mentality of over-tidyness in years past leading to the granite of war memorials being pressure washed and the bronze coated in polyeurethane paint. These treatments undermine the status of these materals which have always been highly valued by man. Wet look paint jobs leave the sculpture looking like glass fibre models. The richness of the bronze patina should be appreciated for what it is, the proof of its metal.
