Carrick's use of shallow relief which creates such subtle plays of light and which enhances the rich patina of the bronze is also reminiscent of the military medal, an idea re-enforced by the stong profiles of the two soldiers in the left foreground . The medal and bronze plaque was a special branch of the sculptor's art in which Carrick was interested and he executed and exhibited several bronze medals and plaques at exhibitions. His adoption of this traditionally military and commemorative iconography of the medal charges the panel with yet a further layer of meaning.
