Some of Carrick's drawings made in his sketch book in the summer of 1918 in the Ypre Salient. Carrick was not a portrait artist and his portrait reliefs were always rather formal, yet in his sketches he captured some of the personality of his comrades.

As a student at Edinburgh College of Art Carrick excelled in all of his classes with the exception of the drawing class, where he always struggled.

Incidentaly the difference in the whiteness of the background is because of variations in the photocopy, not the original paper.
